Did You Know? Project Green is Working to Make Malta Greener!

On the sun-drenched islands of Malta, the newly established Project Green is striving to infuse green principles into every corner of the nation. As an inspiring environmental initiative, this agency aims to invest €700 million over the next seven years to extensively develop, maintain, and revitalize public gardens and other outdoor open spaces across Malta and Gozo.

Did You Know? Project Green is Working to Make Malta Greener!

This ambitious plan is not a solo endeavor by the government. Throughout its implementation, Project Green will actively engage the community, collaborating closely with other government departments, local councils, and non-governmental organizations. By working together, they aim to ensure that residents can easily walk to green recreational areas from their homes. Community involvement not only ensures that the projects meet the actual needs of residents but also motivates the public to take an active role in maintaining these shared resources.

What’s even more exciting is that Project Green’s ambitions extend far beyond this. The agency is committed to fundamentally improving the urban ecological landscape of Malta and Gozo through initiatives such as tree planting, grass sowing, and the creation of parks. Their goal is to enhance the overall greening level and quality of green infrastructure in the country. Additionally, the agency is open to businesses, actively attracting private investment and innovative technologies to contribute to the green cause. All of these efforts align with Malta’s Sustainable Development Strategy for 2050, which serves as the government’s overarching environmental framework. This strategy aims to comprehensively advance the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals through cross-departmental collaboration, influencing all aspects of government, society, and economic operations, and providing a bright guide for sustainable development for the people of Malta.

Currently, Project Green has already begun transformation efforts in several areas. The heart of San Gwann has been revitalized with the construction of a large park that includes an aquatic plant garden, playgrounds, an open-air theater, community gardens, and various recreational zones. Not far from Hospice Malta, a large garden has also been completed, providing a tranquil retreat for patients and staff. Furthermore, the Maltese government has established national standards for green roofs, encouraging both private and public buildings to play their part.

Meanwhile, more projects are in the pipeline. According to recent updates, a former military base is set to be redeveloped into a large integrated park covering 160,000 square meters, featuring sports facilities, children’s play areas, and green spaces. A 5,000-square-meter garden park is also scheduled to begin construction in the center of Pwales next year. In the coming years, Project Green plans to build multiple playgrounds, sports facilities, and urban woodlands in both the northern and southern regions of Malta.

A vibrant energy is blossoming across this sunlit archipelago. Every newly cultivated lawn and every newly planted tree will add a touch of green to the lives of the Maltese people. With the government and the community working hand in hand to nurture these efforts, Malta is poised to set an example in environmental stewardship, becoming a lush green gem in the Mediterranean!
