Six Ongoing Greening Projects in Malta: Are There Any Near You?

If you’ve been wandering around Malta and Gozo recently, you may have noticed a quiet surge of greenery. This transformation is thanks to the newly established Project Green, an initiative by the Maltese government. Since its launch in January 2023, this agency has been dedicated to enhancing green spaces across the two main islands, creating new parks, gardens, and recreational areas in every corner. According to the latest updates, Project Green plans to invest over €10 million this year alone in 16 projects throughout the Maltese archipelago. With this community greening funding, they aim to ensure that a quarter of Malta’s residents can reach open outdoor spaces within a 10-minute walk. To highlight these green initiatives, here are six representative projects currently underway:

1. Bengħajsa Park: Located in Birżebbuġa, Bengħajsa Park was previously used as a signal transmission site, with several towers still visible today. The revamped park will become the largest in southern Malta. The final phase of the renovation began in 2020, focusing on reforestation in the area. The total investment for the park’s development has reached €4 million, with completion expected in 2024. The new park will offer a variety of recreational opportunities, including green areas, sports facilities, picnic and camping spots, and play areas.

2. Dog Park: A previously unused plot of land in Ta’ Ġawhar has been transformed into a fantastic space for picnics and dog walking, providing a fresh experience for residents of Ħal Safi and their pets. [Google Maps Location](https://maps.app.goo.gl/c7LGS1USLH4NfRxx7)

3. Gudja Community Garden: A 1,100-square-meter area in Gudja is being revitalized into an open and sustainable community garden.

4. Bormla Parking Complex: A 3,000-square-meter plot in Bormla, originally designated for construction, has been returned to the community. This space will feature an underground parking facility and a surface area dedicated entirely to greenery.

5. Mosta Green Campus: The Millbrae Grove area in Mosta has become Malta’s first “green open campus.” Students can now enjoy a space surrounded by trees, equipped with facilities for internet access, charging, and studying. Google Maps Location

6. San Ġwann Public Green Space: According to government plans, after the redevelopment of green spaces, approximately 90% of San Ġwann residents will be able to access new public green areas within a 10-minute walk.

It’s clear that greenery is gradually becoming an integral part of life for the people of Malta. Children now have new playgrounds, adults have more leisure options, and the entire island exudes a more vibrant atmosphere. Notably, all these projects are being developed on land that was previously unused or designated for other purposes, reflecting the Maltese government’s commitment to harmonizing development with environmental sustainability. With the relentless efforts of Project Green, Malta is poised to soon unveil an even more enchanting green charm!
