Why is the Average Height of Maltese Women Only 163 cm?

When people think of European countries, they often envision tall, statuesque men and women. However, this stereotype may not apply to Maltese women, as data from the NCD indicates that the average height of women in Malta is only 163 cm. Compared to the taller Dutch and Montenegrin women, this might seem somewhat short. Yet, upon closer examination, the height of Maltese women is not excessively low; it is just slightly below the overall average for women in Europe.

Why is the Average Height of Maltese Women Only 163 cm?

Statistics show that the average height for women across Europe is 167 cm, which is only a 4 cm difference from the 163 cm average of Maltese women. The shortest country is Cyprus, with an average height of just 160.6 cm, while the tallest is the Netherlands, where women average 170.4 cm. So, why are Maltese women shorter than those in other European countries? The reasons for this difference may include the following factors:

1. Genetic Factors: Each ethnic group has its unique physical characteristics, often influenced by historical development, geographical environment, and other factors. As a Mediterranean nation, Malta’s residents tend to be relatively shorter, which may be attributed to long-standing lifestyle habits and dietary culture in the region.

2. Nutritional Intake: In recent years, many European countries have seen significant improvements in the nutritional levels of their populations, leading to an overall increase in height. However, in Malta, limited island resources and challenging climatic conditions may have resulted in suboptimal nutritional intake, contributing to shorter stature.

3. Lifestyle: Besides genetics and nutrition, lifestyle can also impact height. Compared to some taller ethnic groups, the daily activity levels of Maltese people may be lower, with a reliance on vehicles for transportation and insufficient physical exercise, which can, to some extent, limit height development.

However, it is important not to hastily conclude that Maltese women are simply short. In fact, even though their average height is slightly below the European average, 163 cm is still considered a standard height and does not detract from the charm and beauty of Maltese women. In comparison, many countries have average female heights that are even lower than Malta’s. For instance, women in Cyprus have an average height of only 160.6 cm, which is 2.4 cm shorter than their Maltese counterparts. Thus, in a broader context, the height of Maltese women can be considered quite average.

Moreover, we should not define a person’s beauty solely by their height. Everyone possesses their unique charm, and whether short or tall, individuals should be treated equally without any discrimination. True beauty lies in a person’s inner qualities and character, not just their outward appearance. Therefore, it is essential to avoid any biases regarding the height of Maltese women. They, too, have their distinct allure and deserve respect and appreciation. We should discard stereotypes and adopt a more open and inclusive mindset to appreciate the unique beauty of women from different countries.
